Information Pane
The information pane, on the right hand side of the iDefrag window, displays three different panes of information depending on which of the three buttons at the top are selected.
Filesystem information
The left-most button selects the filesystem information pane, which displays information about the filesystem itself, including statistics on fragmentation and a list of fragmented files.
Included in this is the following information:
Filesystem
- Total Blocks
- The total number of blocks in the filesystem. Typically for HFS+, each block is 4KB in size, though it is possible for that to vary.
- Used Blocks
- The number of blocks that are currently in use.
- Folders
- The number of folders in the filesystem.
- Files
- The number of files in the filesystem.
- of which Fragmented
- The number of fragmented files in the filesystem, also displayed as a percentage.
- Free Space Fragments
- The number of fragments of free space in the filesystem.
File Compression
- Compressed Files
- The number of files on the volume that are compressed, also displayed as a percentage.
- Uncompressed Size
- The total size of the compressed files if they were all decompressed.
- Compressed Size
- The total amount of space used by the compressed files, and as a percentage of the uncompressed size.
Fragmentation Summary
- Files
- The first number is the percentage of data that is not in the first extent of the file in which it is stored. The second number gives the proportion of fragments per block of data.
- Free Space
- The first number is the proportion of free space that is not in the largest free space area. The second number is the proportion of fragments per block of free space.
- Filesystem Metadata
- This expresses the same information as for Files, but for the filesystem metadata itself.
Fragmented Files
This panel lists the most fragmented files on the disk; there are a maximum of 1,024 entries in this list, so if you have a very heavily fragmented disk it may not show all of the fragmented files here.
All paths in the iDefrag user interface are expressed relative to the root of the filesystem being examined.
You can click on a file here to select its extents, and if you double-click, iDefrag will jump to that file in the main block view.
Block view key
The middle button selects the key pane, which shows the meanings of each of the colours in the main block view.
The colour chips on the left can be clicked to edit the colours; colours set in this manner are remembered by iDefrag and will apply to any class with the same name, even if you switch class set.
File information
Finally, the right-hand button selects the file information pane, which displays information about either the currently selected file (or files), or the file over which the mouse pointer is hovering in the main block view.
Included here is the following information:
General
- Type
The kind of file that you are pointing at. This may be one of the following:
Type Description Normal File A normal file. Compressed File A compressed file. Special File Filesystem metadata. Folder Alias A hard-linked folder. Named Pipe (FIFO) A named pipe or FIFO. Character Device A BSD character device file. Block Device A BSD block device file. Symbolic Link A symbolic link file. Socket A UNIX socket. White-out A “white-out” file (used with union mounts). Hard Link A “hard link file” (used to implement hard links). - Size
- The size of the file. You can change the unit in which this is expressed using the blue lozenge.
- CNID
- The Catalog Node ID of the file. This uniquely identifies the file within a given HFS+ volume.
- Class
- The class that iDefrag has assigned to the file.
Ownership & Permissions
- Owner
- The UID of the file’s owner (a number identifying a particular user).
- Group
- The GID of the file’s owner (a number identifying a particular group of users).
- File Mode
- The UNIX file mode for this file, expressed as a number in octal (base 8), and also decoded in parentheses.
Timestamps
- Created
- The creation time of the file.
- Content Modified
- The time at which the file was last modified.
- Attribs Modified
- The time at which the file’s attributes were last modified.
- Last Accessed
- The time at which the file was last accessed.
- Last Backup
- The time at which the file was last backed-up.
Paths
If you are using hard links, a file may have more than one name and/or be in more than one place on the volume. This pane lists all of the known names of the file over which you are hovering.
